Professional ambitions

A nurse is defined as one who takes care of the sick and the disabled. Now, a nurse may not know as much about sicknesses as a physician. He or she may not gain as much as a licensed doctor in terms of financial gain but a nurse gains so much more that the doctor in terms of fulfillment in his chosen profession thanks to his constant communication and interaction with people, sick and disabled people who need the said communication and interaction the most. He receives gratification in his field rarely by words of mouth. But rather, he obtains his appreciation through the faces of people he helped along the path to recovery. He acquires satisfaction in helping other people in their times of need. He obtains pleasure upon seeing the smile of a usually irritable patient. He achieves contentment upon seeing one of his patient recover from a condition the doctors have deemed “terminal.”

Nursing is a noble profession. There is nothing wrong with helping other people, especially in their times of need. It could even be considered a great act of compassion to offer assistance to a complete stranger.

These days, it seems that most of our population as Filipinos want to become nurses. Some for the reasons stated above and some for financial reasons. They want to be able to go abroad and land a good working job as a nurse in some other county where they could earn financially far more than they could ever hope and dream to achieve while working here in our own country. Now, there is nothing wrong with this reason. They probably want to help their families. They want to bring their families out of poverty. They want a better life for their loved ones.

Nurses are in great demand abroad due to a lack of them, and those said countries are now importing them from other countries to help ease the said shortage. Now, though the shortage has been eased, we cannot deny the fact that it still exist which is why there is still a great demand for nurses and such is the reason why Filipinos can easily land a job as a nurse abroad.

It seems ideal right? Maybe it is. Easily landing a job wherein you could assisting other people, finding personal gratification AND earning a bigger income compared to the income one could possibly gain while working in our own country and possibly helping loved ones back home. Such is the reason why numerous people have this desire to study nursing.

I would like to point out that though I may be taking up nursing, I HAVE NO INTENTIONS OF WORKING AS A NURSE. My professional ambition is to become a lawyer. Now, I must first earn a degree in any four-year course prior to taking –up law, as is the pre-requisition. Studying law is no walk-in-the- park. There have been countless people who started to study law just to drop out or fail in the middle of their studies due to the sheer difficulty of it. There are still a number of people who finished their studies but are still unable to work as professional lawyers since they failed to pass countless rigid examinations.

Now, after I finish my studies in nursing, I would proceed to studying law. Now if sometime during my studies in law, I decide to discontinue my pursuit of law, at least I would at least have a fallback. I would still be able to land a job with ease as a nurse either here or abroad.

Prior to college, I considered taking up countless other courses which would serve as my pre-law such as Legal Management, Accounting, Commerce, Political science and countless others. But as I reflected upon those choices and compared them to the choice of my parents and grandparents which is nursing, I found out that I could gain so much more if I took up nursing as my pre-law than any other course.

Now, just to make it clear, my parents and grandparents didn’t force me to study nursing. Yes it may be true that they were the ones who presented nursing to me. But they still allowed me to choose my course. They were only guiding me towards the path they think is the best for me. And the more I reflected on it, the more I saw their side of the story and I soon came upon the conclusion that they were right. This is the best course for me and I thank my parents and grandparents for introducing this path to me and guiding me through my studies.

A falling star
Least I fall alone.
I can't explain what you can't explain.
You're finding things that you didn't know
I look at you with such disdain
